Roles
for the Yacht Owner
Requirements
Definition - Amazingly, this
is a fundamental process that is often overlooked in this
industry. It starts
with questions like: What is the normal use of the yacht? Who will
normally operate the yacht? Who will maintain the yacht? Does the
yacht most often visit docks or anchor out? What sort of power and
water is supplied at docks visited? How long are trips normally?
What is the normal and maximum cruising territory? What are the
communication and entertainment requirements?
How hearty are the guests? (air-conditioning vs. quiet)
Requirements
Review and Refinement - Each
requirement has cost implications and various side effects. Some requirements are surprisingly costly and have
undesirable side effects and should be compromised. Other
functions are easily attained in a potential configuration, and
might be added to the list if they are desirable.
Overall System
Design or Design Review - Component
Selection and sizing, Layout and placement for maintenance access,
operator access, space planning, and minimization of wiring and
plumbing runs.
Detail
Design or Design Review of System Integration
- The “glue” between the systems requires special attention,
because it often is missed by all of the specific equipment
vendors. Common examples are power distribution, pre-wiring,
operational procedures and logistic support issues.
Tracking
Requirements to Specs - All
requirements must be reflected in the specifications.
Specification items without requirements should be dropped.
Tracking
Spec Compliance - Catching
problems in-process minimizes costs and avoids unneeded
compromises
Test and Evaluation
of the Final Product –
This critical point will establish responsibilities for corrective
action, and the degree of spec compliance.
This can allow the customer to sit down for an orderly
closing settlement with reasonable holdbacks for the inevitable
open items.
Operational
Procedure Development –
The operator needs a guide that encompasses all the detailed
instructions of all the different subsystems. This can greatly
enhance the operator’s overall satisfaction with the project.
Crew
Training and Indoctrination
– Unfortunately, hiring crew is a periodic requirement of yacht
owners. New captains
are likely to discount the value of installed Yacht Systems due to
unavailability of a cohesive overall indoctrination.
“Rip this whole mess out and…”, is often part of a
new crew’s reaction. The Yacht System Engineer can provide this indoctrination and
help the owner evaluate any recommendations by the new crew.
